EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
