Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.
This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.
The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Global Responses
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brasília.
The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.
The judges found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
